The Google Multitask Unified Model (MUM) technology was shown off by the Big-G recently as it correctly identified over 800 vaccine names in 50 different languages. This could be a game-changer for search.
According to Google, “AstraZeneca, CoronaVac, Moderna, Pfizer, Sputnik and other broadly distributed vaccines all have many different names all over the world — over 800, based on our analysis. People searching for information about the vaccines may look for ‘Coronavaccin Pfizer,’ ‘mRNA-1273,’ ‘CoVaccine’ — the list goes on … With MUM, we were able to identify over 800 variations of vaccine names in more than 50 languages in a matter of seconds. After validating MUM’s findings, we applied them to Google Search so that people could find timely, high-quality information about COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.”
Why do we care?
This is another tidbit from Google, “MUM has the potential to transform how Google helps you with complex tasks. MUM uses the T5 text-to-text framework and is 1,000 times more powerful than BERT.”
So, as it’s powered by AI, MUM may become the standard for search as it is able to interpret complex queries quickly. Look for this to rollout sometime in the future, but don’t tell anyone as until then, MUM Is The Word.
