In another effort to diversify, Google has become an official ICANN approved domain registrar. Does this means Google intends to give GoDaddy a run for their money? Maybe and maybe not. This does beg the question, though as to what Google’s intent is on becoming a domain registrar, especially when profit-margins are so low.
Perhaps the idea is to offer package deals to users such as Gmail, domain registration, Blogger signup, free storage, automatic AdSense signup, web hosting all rolled into one bundle. Or perhaps, they wish to gather information from the Whois database and this will pave the way.
Right now its just a bunch of speculation. But, you have to hand it to Google that they know how to create a buzz. They make a move such as this without a formal announcement and the whole search engine industry is buzzing with speculation, conspiracy theories and the like. Once again Google has sent up a nice trial balloon, gathering a ton of customer feedback without solicitation. Now let’s see what their next move is.
