You might have observed so many debates and discussions going on about Google LaMDA. A Google engineer recently stated that LaMDA is able to understand all the queries and conversations very clearly and it responds with human-like behavior.
LaMDA basically stands for Language Model for Dialogue Applications. In basic terms, it is a machine learning-based chatbot that is capable enough to talk about any possible topic.
Note that as per recent updates from Google, this chatbot is currently trained only for understanding language. Therefore, it cannot respond with audio, images, and videos. However, in the future, you may see such abilities as well with some enhancement in technology.
Language Models
LaMDA is basically a language model that is based on the concept of natural language processing- which means, it is capable enough to analyze the use of specific languages.
In technical terms, it is a mathematical function or we can also call it a statistical tool that can help to estimate next word sequences in a conversation.
This chatbot can also predict next word occurrences and even following paragraph sequences as well.
One of the most common examples of a language model is OpenAI’s GPT-3 which takes any topic and some useful instructions as input and can write content in the specific style of an author. It helps to generate some good-quality essays and stories instantly.
But LaMDA is very different from other language models available in the market because it is trained mainly on dialogue instead of text.
Why LaMDA is a big deal?
As there is so much buzz about LaMDA in the world, you might be interested to know what the big deal in this is. Well, this invention is proven to be more notable due to its ability to generate conversations in a free-floating manner.
This specially trained conversation model can understand things more like the intent of a multimodal user with the support of reinforcement learning; it has the ability to easily jump around conversations with unrelated topics as well.
Same as GPT-3 and MUM language models, LaMDA is also developed on transformer neural network architecture which assists in convenient language understanding. It is trained specifically to understand the dialogue context to provide an easy flow of conversations. Furthermore, it is trained to understand the core sense of responses in a specific context.
In the future, Google aims to design a model that can understand even other forms of conversations as well in near future. It is expected that these models in the future will provide complete human-like behaviors with the support of advanced language models and neural networks. The CEO of Google recently stated in an interview that the natural language processing abilities of LaMDA have huge potential to understand relevant information in the conversations and it makes the computing process readily more efficient. In the future, it will be trained to recognize videos, audio, and images as well, and possibly all capabilities will be integrated into a single model to ensure enhanced engagement.
