History of Irvine City in California

Irvine was inhabited about 2000 years ago by members of the Gabrielino indigenous group. Europeans took over Irvine in 1769, which they used for missions and private activities.

In 1821, Mexico became independent from Spain, and it is during that time that the Irvine Ranch was apportioned by the Mexican government. 1n 1864, 50,000 acres of the land was purchased by James Irvine and a group of other men.

However, James later died and his son inherited the ranch, where he developed the Irvine Company. The company grew crops such as citrus and olives.

In the 1940s, James Irvine Jr. died, his son took over the company, and it was after he took over that urban development commenced. When he died, the University of California bought about 1,000 acres of the land, which they used to build a new campus.

Later, William Pereira decided to form a partnership with the Irvine Company. Through their combined effort, they were able to create a planned city for about 50,000 people.

The newly developed area was named Irvine, while the agricultural area was named East Irvine. In the 1970s, the communities voted and it was after the voting that they decided to create a larger city.

Today, the City of Irvine comprises of various villages, which are separated by streets. All the township villages have similar designs. What’s more, the villages have commercial centers, churches, and schools.

Irvine City is home to more than 250,000 residents.  The city measures 66 square miles, with a density of over 4000 people per square mile. About 31.4% of Irvine’s residents are between the ages of 25 and 44.
