Orange County CA Public Service Message

CNN Heat Warning for West Coast

I don’t do many public service messages in this blog but I think this Labor Day weekend of 2020 calls for one. This is because there are a couple of extreme conditions in play including Covid-19 and extreme heat conditions.

For much of Orange County, California the heat starting today is expected to get over 110 degrees in many places.

Here’s a few headlines from respected national news outlets that will give one pause:

“California’s ‘brutal’ heat wave is underway, expected to topple all-time records, escalate fire risks” – MSN

“Prevailing heat wave strikes SoCal as Orange County approaches triple-digit territory” – Fox News

“It’s going to be a hot Labor Day weekend, with record-breaking highs in the West” – CNN

According to the National Weather Service (NWS): “Dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures 117 to 122 expected in the lower deserts, around 110 to 118 for inland Orange County, the San Diego County alleys, and the Inland Empire, and around 108 to 112 for the high desert.”

Again, from the NWS: “Extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.”

Orange County Covid-19 Dashboard Labor Day 2020

This brings me to my next point of Covid-19 in Orange County. According to the Orange County Covid-19 dashboard as of today September 5, 2020 there have been 1,042 deaths in the OC out of 49,258 cases.

People naturally will be flocking to the beaches to escape the heat this weekend which means more potential to not be able to social distance as the crowd density will be in play.

So, I implore you dear reader to stay safe. Wear a mask and stay vigilant about social distancing. If so, we will get through this heat and this disease together!
